The significance of Hz. Mevlana Rumi for health care today.

"Hark, come hither for the incurable disease! We, one bay one, are a medicine for the sick". (Mathnawi book 3, 2709)

In my younger years, I was fascinated by the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, and particularly the way in which he believed that his belief had assigned him to care for the sick and pariahs. In these unfortunate people, he recognised the mercy of the Beloved One. He washed the wounds of lepers and his belief raised him above the fear of becoming leprous himself. He was not afraid of becoming infected. He made no distinction whether the people actually became healed or not, hi simply cared for them in the Name of the Beloved One, he became the instrument of the Beloved One and he gave them care, love, trust and hope. He made it clear to them that however desperate their situation, there was Love; there was a Beloved One who loved them. He was a living proof of the presence of that one Beloved One, known under so many Names.

That was how I wished to live. A couple of years later, I had the opportunity as a carer to combine my care for the sick with the spirituality of Francis. It wasn't easy. My medical training regarded matters such as inspiration and instead taught professionalism to imply distancing oneself from clients and the use of mechanical reference and treatment protocols. Besides, in my Franciscan life, spirituality was seen as being a phenomenon outside of daily reality. One's spiritual life and one's working life were two separate issues. Heads and hands not following the intuition of one's heart. Totally out of line with the message conveyed by so many wise men from the religious traditions. It's not the message from the prophet Mohammed, from Jesus, from Moses (may God save their secrets). It is exactly in our daily lives that we, the believers, are requested to bear witness to a message of Love. It became my task to join together the spirituality of love and the professional care for people. Francis was a man of few words, he passed on his experience but no knowledge, no insight. I wanted to also find the knowledge which would help me to substantiate the need for inspired health care, and to pass on this knowledge to colleagues. I have been successful in doing so, thanks to Hz. Mevlana Rumi.

In my guest for knowledge, I came across the works of this fantastic man and mystic, as they were conserved and conveyed in an Occidental school according to the Mevlevi tradition. In him, I recognised the loving passion of Francis combined with the experienced knowledge of a mystic, who could express both the ultimate Divineness and the most coarse banality. In him and his works, I found the bridge between the realities, in him I found the beauty and significance of Islam as a road to actual submission, with two feet firmly planted in this world. In him I found a person who sought above all the Countenance of the Beloved One, beyond the borders of religion and profession, and in doing so, could link worlds which seemed incompatible. It came as no surprise that Jews. Christians and Muslims all joined together to take leave of Hz. Mevlana Rumi when his time came to depart from this world. Neither is it strange that, today, there is once again such great global interest in this Pool of Love, in this Bridge who was able to embrace the impossible, to love the sick and to continuously and patiently address the non-believers.

As the director of an institution for health care and a training institute for professional carers, I can state that this pact between soul and care as practised today by myself and may staff, and accepted, and eve sought by the regular organisations and government, is largely due to the insights expressed by Hz. Mevlana Rumi and the encouragement radiated by him right up until this day. Not only via his written works but also via the custodians and conveyors of this valuable heritage in the person of Celebi Efendi, being the 22nd generation grandson of Hz. Mevlana Rumi and his Sektarik Huseyin Top Efendi, but also throughout the Mevlevi Order and all those people in the world who put on the gloves of love in daily life, and who care for their fellow men, with heart and soul, with head and hands.

"Hark; come hither for the incurable disease! We, one by one, are a medicine for the sick." The secret lies in this 'we, one by one, are a medicine'. The success of the work in our institute and the core of our professional training lies in relearning that, first and foremost, we ourselves are the instrument of the Beloved one and that we are also doctor, nurse, psychologist. The latter is auxiliary to the former. Hz. Mevlana Rumi calls on us to have the courage to be a guesthouse and to encourage others to follow our example. "Humanity is about being a guesthouse, with something new arriving each day. A joy, a depression, a weakness. Welcome and entertain them all! Even when faced with a multitude of sorrows, which violently shake your house clean of its furnishings, still try to treat each guest with respect. He may be sweeping you clean for some new joy. Meet the dark thoughts, the shame, the anger with a smile at your door and invite them in. Be grateful for whatever comer your way, because all are sent as a guide from beyond." This respect has proven to be a source of healing and mercy to me, for myself and for the sick and pariahs whom I am allowed to encounter along my way. This acceptance of reality as it present itself has proven to be the key to change, the healing which is possible and which was hidden in the heart of the pain, of the illness. His liberating opportunity begins with the way in which I show this in my relationshp with those who ask and need my help. Of course, these are not all professional carers, because caring is a completely natural characteristic of humanity and a necessity for those of us who belleve. The carer who can simultaneously play the roles of fellow human, mirror end teacher for those who need help, and who can remain modest in doing so. After all, he is privileged to do so, as an instrument of the Beloved One.

The carer as the helper, who dares to approach the emptiness in himself and the emptiness in others. As Hz. Mevlana Rumi says "Each craftsman looks for what is missing, in order to ply his trade. A builder looks for the rotten hole, where the roof is caving in, a water carrier chooses an empty cask; a carpenter stops at the house without a door. Do not imagine that you should avoid the emptiness. It contains exactly what you need. This invisible ocean has given you so much abundance, but you still refer to that which gives you a livelihood and work as being 'dead'". Being human, we tend to avoid the emptiness, the difference, the intangible, the pain, the illness, the suffering. But there is suffering. There is illness. There is a difference. There is misconception. Rumi gives us a clear sign. Let us not turn aside and call dead, that which is different, which is suffering. It is precisely that which we tend to call dead, which gives us our livelihood and work. Moreover; it gives us the capacity to accept and to endure. It is in this acceptance and endurance that we find the mercy of compassion and wisdom which makes us living people, makes us wonderful instruments of the Beloved One. The care for our fellow humans is our footpath on the road Home.

May your peace and blessings be with Hz. Mevlana Rumi and with his family, literally and spiritually, right up to the present day. May the ray of the Beloved One be with you, or to cite Hz. Mevlana Rumi's words: "May the ray of the light of Divine Majesty be our inspirer!"
